5 Little Things Every DSLR Photographer Needs You To Buy Them For The Holidays

all.jpg

So for the last few weeks I have been toying around with the idea of doing a holiday gift suggestion post, but until now I couldn’t get motivated to do it. Why? Who knows, maybe because most of these so-called “gift guides” are nothing more than paid advertisements and big wastes of time. So you might ask, what motivated me to finally get off my ass and do it? This…

Well, to be more specific, the first page. Now, I do love PopPhoto, and usually get a lot out of what I read there, but when this one popped into my feed reader and I clicked through, I almost didn’t make it past the first page. I mean, a 3D space navigator mouse thingie? an $80 card reader? a USB thumb drive? and a few other things that if I received I would smack someone. But seriously, what photographer wants this crap. There is a LensPen, good, at least one ray of light. Luckily, I was able to suppress the urge to break things long enough to get to the second page, and there we are, some good stuff, and the PopPhoto gift guide was saved, and actually has some really cool stuff, some of which I will mention here. If you plan on checking it out, I suggest starting on page 2 :)

So now you are probably wondering, what do the crazies at CameraPorn think you should get for that special photographer you love? Well, everything I’m going to list are things you should get for yourself, and if you have a few bucks left over, buy your friends something. I’ll keep it short, sweet and cheap. List after the jump.

A Bit of Maintenance Tonight

Sunset In Tobago

Just a little heads-up, due to some critical electrical systems maintenance at our data center, CameraPorn.net will be down for a couple hours tonight starting at around 9:30PM Pacific time.

And as a side note, some of you may have noticed some scary viagra and cialis links in our blogroll this morning. Apparently the version of wordpress we are running was slightly out of date, and had a little security hole. This has been fixed and shouldn’t happen again.

Cartagena, Colombia Here I Come!

Tomorrow night I’ll be hoppin’ on a redeye to the beautiful but humid Cartagena, Colombia for a friends wedding. Cartagena is a beach-side resort town on the Caribbean, rich in history and architecture.

I expect to do a good amount of shooting, but I’ve decided to travel light for once, and I’m trying to get the biggest impact in the smallest footprint. Here’s what I’m bringing:

…and thats it! Pretty good considering I usually bring 4 to 5 lenses and a myriad of accessories. Wish me luck and hope I don’t get kidnapped!

Hot and Sticky is not Always Sexy…Humidity and DSLR Photography

The road to Maracas, Trinidad

Being that I’m currently a mere 10.5 degrees north of the equator, this seems to be the proper time to discuss how humidity can be a major pain when shooting in tropical regions if you don’t recognize the issue and plan ahead. I’m sure I’m not the only one whose run out from a nicely air conditioned room with my camera in hand to get a quick shot, and all I came back with was a hazy, blurry mess or a missed opportunity…

Considering that before residing in the arid city of Los Angeles, I was a long-time resident of the muggy and sticky Miami, Florida, and though when shooting in wonderfully dry southern California, humidity is an afterthought, my current trip to Trinidad has renewed my bad memories of shooting in humidity before I learned from my mistakes. To be perfectly clear, I must say humidity in and of itself, is not the biggest problem. The problem lies with the extreme temperature changes that are frequently experienced when moving from the comfort of an air conditioned building or vehicle to the disgustingly sticky outdoor environment of a place like Trinidad or Miami.

Please keep in mind I bring you this information out of experiences….well…mistakes I’ve made and not as an expert in shooting in humid environments. That said, I present you 5 tips to avoid the humidity monster:

Trinidad Bound

Port of Spain - Trinidad

That’s right, tonight 1/2 of the CameraPorn crew will be on the redeye to Trinidad. I will be lugging pretty much my whole kit with me and plan to shoot… a lot. I was also lucky enough to swipe chl’s shiny, new 24-70 f/2.8 L (review coming soon) for the trip. Let me tell you, that was not an easy sell… but I will make very nice use of it. Thanks chl! I’ll take care of her, i promise. Expect to see an ‘On Location’ post upon my return.

Anyone out there been? If so, I’m open to suggestions for shooting :)

Fresh New Look, Same Great CameraPorn

Huntington Botanical Gardens-60

As you might have noticed, the site has undergone something of a facelift. Since launching cameraporn.net last month, I haven’t been satisfied with the standard theme we were using and had plans from day 1 to do something about it. I was able to make time for it this weekend, and though it is still a work in progress, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Let me know what you think!
