A Little Spring Cleaning for CameraPorn

You may have noticed CameraPorn is looking a little different. Been a long time coming, but some spring cleaning was in order for us. I’ve redesigned the entire theme to be a bit easier on the eyes and I hope you guys like it! A couple of my favorite features: Header texture taken directly from the Canon 1Ds Mk III along with ’subscribe’ button in that style as well, the new ‘get social’ area in the sidebar…. Feel free to friend us on any of those links, AND what I hope to be a general improvement in overall readability and usability. It’s still new so there could be soe bugs here and there. If you see anything weird, or have any comments at all, let us know!!!

Canon Lens Porn Overload

Though this would generally just warrant a mini-porn post, the sheer magnitude of this lens porn is astounding. Ya see, Canon is celebrating their 40 Millionth EF lens in production. Along with the press release, Canon included this drool inducing image of the entire EF lens line at high resolution. Try not to drool all over your keyboard folks, I know I did. Press release after the jump…

Full Lunar Eclipse Tonight!

lunar eclipse across sky - timelapse

Tonight is another rare opportunity to shoot a full lunar eclipse. Back in August we had one, and I put together some tips for shooting a lunar eclipse, and my shots from the last one. Check it out here. Here in California, the eclipse will begin around 6:45 or so continuing until 8 or so. To get detailed timing information, check out Nasa’s lunar eclipse page. Unfortunately, I won’t be shooting it tonight, only because currently Los Angeles is completely covered in clouds and rain, but happy shooting to everyone else and feel free to post links to your shots in the comments.

Theme Issues Almost Fixed

You may notice that CameraPorn isn’t looking quite right at the moment. Yesterday we began having some odd issues with the theme of the site… I’ve gotten the theme back, but the mini-porn you are used to seeing on the right is now inline with the rest of the posts. Should be back to normal soon, but if you see any weirdness, probably just us working on it.

San Francisco Photowalk Tonight

Heading up to San Francisco for the weekend, and I’ll be joining around 40 others for a photowalk. This will not only be my first photowalk, but also my first time in San Francisco. Anyone else planning on attending? Any suggestions on what to see in SF?

Wanna Get Your Gear Stolen or Damaged While Traveling? Don’t Read This.

Seeing that as I’m writing this I am mid-travel on my way to Trinidad, I felt it appropriate to talk a little bit about gear safety while traveling. As seasoned CameraPorn readers may know from previous posts, I from time-to-time travel to Trinidad (read here, here and here). This and a recent, horrible gear theft experience of a friend of mine (more on that later), got me thinking a little bit more about gear safety. Now I’m not talking about professional swimsuit photographers off to Bali, or insane conflict photographers to a war zone. I’m talking about you, and me and most of the readers of this blog… serious hobbyists, traveling for fun and shooting pleasure. For me these trips usually mean a hot, sweaty, foreign country, though the tips I’m going to share can apply to almost anything from a day trip to the desert or an adventure to remote villages in India.

And so we begin, 6 ways to keep your gear happy, safe and sound during your travels.

5 Little Things Every DSLR Photographer Needs You To Buy Them For The Holidays

all.jpg

So for the last few weeks I have been toying around with the idea of doing a holiday gift suggestion post, but until now I couldn’t get motivated to do it. Why? Who knows, maybe because most of these so-called “gift guides” are nothing more than paid advertisements and big wastes of time. So you might ask, what motivated me to finally get off my ass and do it? This…

Well, to be more specific, the first page. Now, I do love PopPhoto, and usually get a lot out of what I read there, but when this one popped into my feed reader and I clicked through, I almost didn’t make it past the first page. I mean, a 3D space navigator mouse thingie? an $80 card reader? a USB thumb drive? and a few other things that if I received I would smack someone. But seriously, what photographer wants this crap. There is a LensPen, good, at least one ray of light. Luckily, I was able to suppress the urge to break things long enough to get to the second page, and there we are, some good stuff, and the PopPhoto gift guide was saved, and actually has some really cool stuff, some of which I will mention here. If you plan on checking it out, I suggest starting on page 2 :)

So now you are probably wondering, what do the crazies at CameraPorn think you should get for that special photographer you love? Well, everything I’m going to list are things you should get for yourself, and if you have a few bucks left over, buy your friends something. I’ll keep it short, sweet and cheap. List after the jump.
