Comments on: New Nikon Full-Frame DSLR?

I have a question. I just moved into a new portrait studio in Temecula and I have a studio that is about 16 feet deep. My primary business is as a youth sports and school photographer in San Diego, but we just got the studio and are doing a lot more studio work. I'm thinking I should get a full frame camera, like the D700, but what is the best lens(s)? Do I get a prime lens? Right now I have 5 Fuji S5's, 2 S3's, 2 D200's and a couple of Canons. Do I need the D700 for just studio work? I love the video on the 5d but the Nikon seems to have a slight edge on some of the other features. I am thinking of renting the D700 and maybe the 5D for a weekend with a couple of lenses to see what they feel like in the studio. Or, am I just fine shooting with the S5's, which are great portrait cameras, but I am a little limited with the 16 foot deep studio. 16 total feet, meaning once you get a tripod and backdrop stands, etc, it is even smaller. Any pointers?

Well, I hope it’s larger than 12ish megapixels. I can’t believe the super-expensive D3 is only 12.1 MP. Love the features I’ve read on it, but figured it’d be bigger to compete with the Canon D1s Mark III.

@AJ – To that I’d really say look at the success of the Canon 5D. I would venture to guess that it has been much more profitable for Canon than the 1D series. As for the authenticity of the materials…who knows… the fakes have happened before, only time will tell.

It makes sense that Nikon reuses much of it’s technology from the D300
(body, af) and the D3 (sensor ,af) in this rumored camera. Nikon is a
very small company compared to Canon.

I’d love it if these rumors were true, as such a camera would make a great complement to my D300 for wide-angle shooting… but it sounds SO much like the camera Nikon buffs have been fantasizing since the D3 appeared that I’m still skeptical.

All the ‘promotional material’ and ad copy in the pics could have been lifted from existing D3 and D300 promo materials; in fact, in several places the words “D700″ look, to my eye, just a bit straighter and cleaner than the surrounding text, as if someone had blotted out “D3″ or “D300″ and Photoshopped in the new text.

The real deal-killer: the specs and performance of the D300 are already very close to those of the D3 except for sensor size. If Nikon brought out an FX-sensor version of the same camera at a much lower price than the D3, wouldn’t they be shooting themselves in the foot with a really big gun?
