This was a SUPER helpful article! I have had a Canon Rebel for almost two years now and I can take really nice pictures with it, but I still don't know anything about the actual technical workings of my camera...I just kind of point and click and see what happens. This was very to the point and helped me arrange all of the ideas in my brain very nicely. Thanks!

Overall a good article although, as there is actually a 'plane of focus' in photography and it's definition is not the same as that for depth of field, your calling depth of field by that name could be a little confusing down the line for people.

Great article, thanks for the coherent writeup. We were just covering this in a beginner DSLR class I started taking. I'll pass on the link to the class.

@Ruth: ISO stands for International Organization for Standards. (Note it's not an acronym. I just learned that too.)

I understand the concept of ISO. I just want to know what the letters stand for.

Just bought my first SLR a few months back, a Canon Xsi. I really love it, but I had been only taking pictures in the basic settings. After reading your article, I have a much better understanding of the basics to advanced shooting. Thanks so much and I am really looking forward to applying my new knowledge!
