BG-E2 Battery Grip

Hello out there in camera land, this is chl coming at you with my first review! This, as it turns out, is the first piece of gear we’re talking about that does not affect image quality in any way. Thus the lack of image quality rating stars up there. Nonetheless, I consider this to be a critical component to my kit.

Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS

There isn’t much I can say about this lens that hasn’t already been said. It’s been called “the best lens Canon makes” and “favorite” more times and by more respectable photo people than I can count. Just search google and see for yourself. The day this puppy was handed to me by the UPS guy, my little "photo hobby" became an obsession. Why, you might ask? Lets see, this is my first “L” lens. Anyone out there who can relate to this, please chime in. Yes, I had briefly used L’s before, but this one was mine, I finally got that red ring around the lens I had been craving. But, it’s so much more than just a red ring…

Canon EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS

Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, it doesn’t get much better for a moderately priced walk-around zoom lens for non full-framed Canon D-SLRs. At a bit over $500, this lens gives you an excellent zoom range, better than average image quality, and Image Stabilization (IS). I picked up this lens about 3 days after getting my Canon 30D, because the 18-55 kit lens that came with the camera provides pretty shoddy performance (I suggest staying as far away as possible from the standard 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 that is packaged with many of Canon’s low to mid-range DSLRs, it’s pretty crappy). As soon as i started using the 17-85 IS, I began to understand why a decent lens makes a world of difference in overall picture quality, and that’s when my obsession with photography and photography equipment started to fester inside me like a bad oyster.

Canon 50mm f/1.4

Yes, when I say fast, I mean like lightning. With a maximum aperture of 1.4, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens makes easy work of any low light situations, and if you’ve never used a lens this fast before, you will be instantly hooked. If the combination of price, speed and image quality on this lens doesn’t wet your appetite, I don’t know what will. Its made this lens a staple and favorite of many photo hobbyists and pros who dont want to pay over $1000 more for the 50mm f1.2 L.

Right out of the box, i was amazed by the performance of Canon’s 580EX flash. Being that i had only used the puny flash built in to my 30D, i realize i didn’t have much to compare to, but WOW was i impressed. The even lighting, the lack of shiny hotspots on peoples faces, the range… this thing is the real deal.
